During the launch event of his book on Urdu poetry, Indian author, lyricist, and filmmaker Javed Akhtar declared Urdu to be the language of Hindustan, while accompanied by his wife, Shabana Azmi. According to Indian media reports, the couple emphasized the importance of the language. During the ceremony, Javed Akhtar stressed that Urdu’s connection is not limited to Pakistan or Egypt, but is actually a language of Hindustan. He further stated that the language did not originate from outside India but is spoken within the country. Javed Akhtar shed light on the fact that Urdu only came into existence as a separate identity after the partition of India, before which it was just a part of Hindustan. Therefore, attributing Urdu solely to Pakistan would be inaccurate. Punjab played a significant role in promoting and popularizing Urdu, which is the regional language of united India. The musician added that it is wrong to consider Urdu as the language of Pakistan. Referring to those who associate Urdu only with Pakistan, Javed Akhtar questioned, “If Pakistan claims Kashmir as its own, should we also accept that? ” In general, during the ceremony, Javed Akhtar’s statements conveyed the message that Urdu is an integral part of India’s cultural heritage and should not be solely associated with Pakistan.
It is evident that last month, Javed Akhtar had a controversial conversation about Pakistanis during the Faiz Festival, after which he remained in the news. After Javed Akhtar stated that Urdu’s connection is not with Pakistan, but with ‘India’, Pakistani Twitter expressed its reaction. Some Pakistani Twitter users had to face criticism for expressing their displeasure with his statement, which targeted him for giving ‘controversial statements against Pakistan’.
The news agency ANI recently reported with reference to Javed Akhtar at a recent event, “Urdu did not come from any other place, it is our own language, it is not spoken outside of India. Pakistan also came into existence after the partition of India, it was initially only a part of India, so this language is not spoken outside of India.” He further stated, “Punjab has contributed a lot to Urdu, and it is the language of India. Why did you abandon this language? Because of the partition, because of Pakistan? Attention should be paid to Urdu.”
Javed Akhtar also said, “Initially, it was only a part of India and later became separate from India to become Pakistan. Now Pakistan says that Kashmir belongs to us. Will you believe it? I don’t think so. Similarly, Urdu is also an Indian language and it still exists today. The younger generation in our country speaks less Urdu and Hindi these days. Nowadays, more attention is given to English. We should speak in Hindi because it is our national language.”

واضح رہے کہ گزشتہ ماہ جاوید اختر نے فیض فیسٹیول کے دوران پاکستانیوں سے متعلق متنازع گفتگو کی تھی جس کے بعد سے وہ خبروں کی زینت رہے۔جاوید اختر کے کہنے پر کہ اردو کا تعلق پاکستان سے نہیں، ‘ہندوستان سے ہے’ کے بعد پاکستانی ٹویٹر نے ردعمل کا اظہار کیا۔۔ ان کے بیان کو پاکستان میں ٹویٹر صارفین کے ایک حصے نے ناپسندیدگی کا سامنا کرنا پڑا، جس نے انہیں پاکستان کے خلاف ‘مسئلہ آمیز بیانات دینے’ پر تنقید کا نشانہ بنایا
خبر رساں ایجنسی اے این آئی نے حالیہ تقریب میں جاوید اختر کا حوالہ دیتے ہوئے کہا، “اردو کسی اور جگہ سے نہیں آئی، یہ ہماری اپنی زبان ہے، یہ ہندوستان سے باہر نہیں بولی جاتی… پاکستان بھی وجود میں آیا۔ ہندوستان سے تقسیم ہونے کے بعد، پہلے یہ صرف ہندوستان کا حصہ تھا، لہذا، یہ زبان ہندوستان سے باہر نہیں بولی جاتی ہے…” انہوں نے مزید کہا، “پنجاب نے اردو کے لیے بہت بڑا تعاون کیا ہے اور یہ ہندوستان کی زبان ہے۔ آپ نے یہ زبان کیوں چھوڑی؟ تقسیم کی وجہ سے، پاکستان کی وجہ سے؟ اردو پر توجہ دینی چاہیے”
جاوید نے یہ بھی کہا، “پہلے یہ صرف ہندوستان تھا، پاکستان بعد میں ہندوستان سے الگ ہوگیا، اب پاکستان نے کہا کہ کشمیر ہمارا ہے… کیا آپ یقین کریں گے؟ میرے خیال میں نہیں، اسی طرح اردو بھی ہندوستانی زبان ہے اور آج کل باقی ہے۔ ہمارے ملک میں نئی نسل اردو اور ہندی کم بولتی ہے۔ آج زیادہ توجہ انگریزی پر ہے، ہمیں ہندی میں بات کرنی چاہیے کیونکہ یہ ہماری قومی زبان ہے
