“Peer-e-Kamil” is a famous novel written by Umera Ahmed. It is a story of two important turning points in the lives of two characters where they have to make a decision between right and wrong. The central character of the story is Imama Hashim, who is related to the Qadiani community and is a medical student. However, due to certain unavoidable circumstances, Imama embraces Islam. On the other hand, the important character of the novel is Salman Sikandar, who is born a Muslim but has no hint of Islam in his life. However, he is a highly intelligent and clever person. In the beginning of Peer-e-Kamil, Imama is introduced as a student, while Salman is portrayed as a wise man, which gives the impression that there is a significant age difference between the two. But as we read the novel, they both appear to be of the same age.

The biggest strength of the novel is that we see a person like Salman Sikandar, who has a photographic memory and is able to comprehend the taste of everything in the world, but he gets involved in every work that reflects moral degradation. Salar wants to experience everything in the world, even if it means death.

Salar is plagued by several questions throughout the novel that are closely tied to his character development. Umera Ahmed has beautifully depicted Salar’s mental and psychological changes from childhood to adulthood. In particular, his tendency to lie, his habit of following wrongdoing, and his restlessness are all factors that force Salar to search for a perfect spiritual guide whose footsteps he can follow to lead a meaningful life.

Peer-e-Kamil portrays Salar’s positive transformation in various situations, and it would have been wonderful if the same level of love and care had been given to the character of Imama Hashim. Moreover, the novel raises a pertinent question about why Salar only pursued a B.A. degree when society offers many opportunities to nurture brilliant children. Overall, the character of the “perfect spiritual guide” is an impeccable creation that is in line with the reader’s taste.
